There was and wasn’t truth in that description. Many anecdotes substantiate the charge that Turner was tight-fisted; many others that he was kind-hearted and at times, at least merry. While as far as the world knew he was dwelling in that macabre and ruinous place, he was in fact living in domestic bliss in Chelsea with a buxom and illiterate widow 25 years his junior, Sophia Booth. Turner called her “old ’un”; she called him “dear”. It seems to have been the most satisfactory relationship he ever had with a woman (perhaps finally overcoming the damage done by that mad and angry mother).
